How to find a travel companion you will actually get along with

Where to find travel companions, how to check you are compatible before booking, safety steps for meeting strangers, and how to split costs fairly.

Your friends cannot get the same week off, but you do not want to go alone. Travelling with someone you met online can be the best trip you take, or the longest. The difference is in how you choose and what you agree on before you go.

Where to find travel companions

  • Companion apps and platforms. Onyatrips helps people find travel companions across India: join a group trip that is already forming and get a group chat once the organizer accepts you, or browse traveller profiles and connect one-on-one. It only shows you to people open to your gender preference.
  • Group tours and small-group operators, where the itinerary is fixed and companions come built in.
  • Travel communities on forums and social media, organized by destination or travel style.
  • Post a request. On Who Wants What you can post exactly what you are looking for, such as “a trekking partner for Ladakh in May”, and let people respond.

Check compatibility before you book

Talk through these before anyone buys a ticket:

  1. Budget: hostels or hotels? Street food or restaurants?
  2. Pace: five sights a day or one and a long lunch?
  3. Mornings and nights: early starts or late nights?
  4. Alone time: how much do you each need?
  5. Deal-breakers: smoking, drinking, schedules, guests.

A video call and a short day trip together before a long trip will tell you more than a month of messages.

Safety steps when meeting someone new

  • Meet first in a public place, and tell a friend who you are meeting and where.
  • Check their profile, reviews and social presence; be wary of anyone who rushes you.
  • Keep your own copies of tickets and ID, and your own emergency money.
  • Book your own room for the first nights until you are comfortable.
  • Share your live location with someone at home.

Split costs without friction

Agree upfront how you will split shared costs: equally, or each pays their own. Use a shared expense tracker and settle up every few days, not at the end.

Before you go

  1. Agree the rough itinerary and which days are flexible.
  2. Agree what happens if one of you wants to leave early.
  3. Exchange emergency contacts and insurance details.

Building a travel product?

Validate it with real travellers first: post it under “I’m building” and let people join your waitlist. Our guide on validating a startup idea explains how.
